If the answer is yes, you can absolutely stretch your budget by going generic. I've known shops that run generic machines profitably for years—but they have in-house technical skills most shops lack. They expect to tinker.

If the answer is no—if one botched batch could kill your margin for the quarter—then buying the Epilog is a business decision, not a technical one.

I believe most B2B shops are in the second category but shopping like they're in the first. That's the mistake I see repeatedly in audits. You don't need a Ferrari to pick up groceries. But if the groceries are $20,000 worth of time-sensitive product that can't be ruined by a bad focus setting? That's a different conversation.
