What a quote never tells you upfront
If you've been researching laser equipment for a while, you've probably noticed there's no single "best" machine. There are machines that fit your work, and machines that don't. That difference becomes painfully obvious when a client gives you 36 hours instead of 36 days.
I'm the production manager at a shop in Chittenden County, Vermont. We use Epilog laser engraving equipment for most of our custom work, and I've handled more than 200 rush orders in the last seven years. Some were same-day turnarounds. Two of them ended with us missing the deadline. Both times, the cause wasn't an unmotivated team or cheap materials. It was us trying to use a machine for something it was never designed to do.
A search for Epilog laser projects shows you all the impressive things the machines can create. But when you're choosing equipment for a business, the real question is narrower: what do your next 20 paid jobs actually look like?
From my seat, that question splits into three very different scenarios.
Scenario A: You mostly engrave and cut wood, acrylic, leather, fabric, or coated metals
If your work is plaques, awards, signs, event displays, decorative panels, or prototype parts in organic and acrylic materials, you don't need an industrial behemoth. You need what some people affectionately call a "baby CO2 laser" — a compact, air-cooled CO2 system with a footprint that doesn't require its own loading dock.
There's a misconception that small entry-level lasers are only for hobbyists. That's not what I've seen in practice. In March 2024, a client came to us at 4 p.m. needing 120 engraved walnut awards for an event the following afternoon. Our compact CO2 machines ran most of the night, but the job went out the door. The bottleneck wasn't the size of the laser. It was our own planning and workflow.
For this scenario, a "starter" machine is often the right production answer. Epilog's Zing and Mini class machines, with their smaller beds and lower price points, have a place in professional shops. You can pair them with a rotary attachment for cylindrical items, add a fume extractor so the operator isn't breathing acrylic fumes, and handle a surprising percentage of real-world customer requests.
The trap here is buying more laser than your jobs require. A bigger bed doesn't make a deadline shorter. A faster machine doesn't help if the file prep or finishing step is what actually eats your hours.
Scenario B: You need permanent marks on metal parts for manufacturing customers
At some point, a manufacturer will ask whether you can put a UID code, serial number, logo, or 2D Data Matrix on stainless steel, aluminum, or titanium. If your CO2-only machine is your only option, you'll have to say no more often than you'd like.
This is the scenario where a fiber laser earns its keep. Buyers often search for a CNC fiber laser marking machine because they're really describing a fiber source paired with a precision motion system and control software. The wavelength difference matters: fiber lasers operate around 1.06 micrometers, which bare metals absorb much more readily than the 10.6-micrometer output of a sealed CO2 tube. That means permanent metal marks without relying on marking compounds or sprays.
From the outside, people assume all laser machines do the same thing. The reality is that CO2 and fiber are different tools for different material families. A CO2 laser excels at organics and plastics; a fiber laser excels at metals and some engineered polymers. If you see yourself taking jobs from machine shops, medical device companies, or electronics manufacturers, this is the fork in the road where you should be looking at a fiber or dual-source system.
Epilog's Fusion platform has configurations with a fiber source, and dual-source Fusion models put a CO2 tube and a fiber source in the same cabinet. That's the route we took, because it let us handle decorative acrylic jobs in the morning and stainless tags after lunch. But if your metal work is rare, buying dual-source capability "just in case" is not automatically smart. You need to be realistic about whether that capability will actually show up in your job queue.
Scenario C: Your calls mention "machine laser welding" — that's a different business
Here's the one that surprises most people, including people who should know better. At least twice a year, a fabricator or machine shop calls us asking if we can weld stainless parts with our laser. What the caller usually means is machine laser welding: a high-power laser system designed to fuse metals, often inside a protective enclosure, sometimes with automated motion control.
A laser engraver is not a laser welder. An engraver vaporizes or ablates the surface. A welder melts and fuses the base material. If you put a structural weld job on a marking machine, you won't get a weld — you'll get a faint line and a disappointed customer. It's like measuring flour with a tire gauge: the tools share the word "laser," but little else.
I once had a metal fabricator ask if we could rush-weld a few components for one of their clients. We sent them to a shop with the right equipment. Cost us nothing, and honestly, it built more trust than a fake yes would have. That's the part of this industry that doesn't show up in spec sheets: being straight about what your equipment cannot do is a competitive advantage.
If you're considering buying equipment because a customer keeps asking for machine laser welding, stop and think. You're not shopping for an engraver. You're starting a different service line, with different power requirements, different safety setup, and a different price point. It may be a great opportunity. But it's not solved by a CNC fiber laser marking machine.
How to tell which scenario you're actually in
Not sure where you fit? Do what I eventually did: look at your last 20 paid jobs, not the dream projects in your marketing plan. Write down the material, the quantity, and the turnaround for each one. Then apply a rough test:
- If 15 or more of those 20 jobs were wood, acrylic, leather, glass, anodized aluminum, or painted metal, a compact CO2 system is the workhorse you need.
- If 5 or more of those jobs involved permanent marking on bare metal for traceability or branding, a fiber or dual-source system should be part of the conversation.
- If people are asking you to weld metal components together, you don't need a laser engraver at all. You need a referral partner or a real laser welding system.
The last test is the one I ignored earlier in my career. In 2022, we lost a contract because I assumed a big enough engraver could do everything. It couldn't. I would have saved us six months of pain if I'd just counted the jobs in front of me instead of the jobs I wanted to attract.
What a quote never tells you upfront
Every equipment buyer I've met eventually learns the same lesson: the price on the brochure is not the total cost. Ventilation, rotary attachments, air assist, training, fixture tooling, and spare parts all show up after the purchase order. That's not a knock on any particular vendor. It's just how capital equipment works.
I've learned to ask "what's NOT included" before I ask "what's the price?" The vendor who lists all the extras upfront — even when the total looks higher — often costs less in the end. The vendor who promises a low base price and discovers the upgrades later is the expensive one. That lesson applies to laser machines, and honestly, to nearly every B2B purchase I've made.
One more thing I check before any deadline quote: the artwork. The commercial print and graphics world treats 300 DPI at final output size as the baseline for crisp reproduction. If a customer sends a web-sized logo and needs it engraved across a 12-inch board, no laser on earth will make that file look sharp. Catching those problems before the machine starts running is what separates a calm shop from a chaotic one.

My advice is simple: buy the machine that matches your actual job history, not the machine that matches your anxiety about missing future opportunities. A compact CO2 that's running at capacity on Wednesday beats a large hybrid system that's still gathering dust in a crate on Wednesday.
