Step 2: Choose CO2 or fiber—and don't let 'metal' confuse you
A CO2 laser works best on organic materials and plastics: wood, acrylic, leather, paper, glass, stone, and some coated metals. A fiber laser marks bare metals and engineered plastics. They're different tools.
I said "we need to engrave metal tags." The dealer heard "we need a CO2 laser that can etch coated metal." Result: we could do anodized aluminum but not the stainless steel tags the maintenance team actually wanted. That communication gap cost us a second quote and about three weeks.
From the outside, laser engraving looks like printing: send a file, press print. The reality is material prep, focus, speed and power settings, and exhaust. It's not hard, but it is a workflow. What I mean is: the machine is only one part of the process.
When you search for Epilog laser projects, most of what you'll find is wood, acrylic, and leather. Those are CO2 jobs. If your requests are mostly bare metal tags, go fiber.
Step 3: Price the whole package, not the base unit
